With miles of coastline and the stunning waters of Óbidos lagoon, the Silver Coast is a great destination for watersport enthusiasts. Surfing is a very popular activity but it is not the only one. Thanks to the Silver Coast's mild climate and favourable weather conditions there are opportunities for almost every type of watersport.
Sailing
The inland waters of Óbidos lagoon provide a safe and sheltered location for sailers of all abilities. There is a sailing centre, Escola de Vela da Lagoa (Tel: 262 978 592), on the Foz do Arelho side which caters for experienced sailors by providing boats and equipment for rental, and for beginners by offering a range of watersports courses.
The school offers courses and facilities for windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing (including catamarans), canoeing, wakeboarding and water skiing, all in the beautiful landscape of Óbidos lagoon. A short distance up the coast to the north, Clube Náutico São Martinho do Porto (Tel: 262 980 290) offers sailing courses in the sheltered waters of São Martinho bay.
For those who prefer the tranquility of the underwater world there are outstanding dive spots in the marine reserve of the Berlengas archipelago, a short boat ride away from Peniche on the Silver Coast.

Kayaking
All along the coast there are opportunities for watersport of every description. Sea kayaking is another great way to explore the coast, although probably best left to paddlers experienced enough to take on the challenging Atlantic waves.
Jet skiing
Jet skiing is another watersport popular on the lagoon. Some riders choose to stay in the sheltered waters while others use the lagoon mouth as an exit route to the ocean to experience the thrill of jet-skiing across its crashing waves.
Stand up paddle-boarding, or SUP, is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world - and it's available on the Silver Coast, where some of the best SUP spots in Europe are located. Check out our insider's guide to some of the top paddleboard sites.
The appeal of the sport is its accessibility. Novices will find themselve up and moving within 15 minutes, and the boards can be ridden on both calm waters and in the roughest surf (although surfing any sizeable wave on one of these requires experience).
Courses and guided SUP tours can be booked through Explore Silver Coast who run surfing, walking and cycling holidays on the Silver Coast.
The islands offer a unique diving experience, with crystal clear waters, hidden beaches and caves and barrier reefs teeming with vibrant marine life. Peniche has two PADI certified dive schools, Haliotis Diving Centre (Tel: 262 781 160) and Acua Sub Oeste (Tel: 918 431 009), which offer regular diving excursions to Berlengas.
