Sport and Leisure
- a place for every sport
Portugal loves its sport and leisure activities, but one sport in particular is so popular it has been known to bring the country almost to a standstill. Such is the interest in football here that there are three daily sports newspapers devoted to the sport.
The action revolves around three main teams, Benfica and Sporting from Lisbon and Porto from the city of that name, and it is hard to find anyone in the country who does not support one of them. When the national team, now rated among the upper ranks of European football, is playing it seems as if every television set in the country is tuned to the game.
Taking in a game at one of these club’s world-class stadiums is a great way to combine sport with leisure as you relax in your seat and watch top-class football played out before you. The games are family orientated and the atmosphere is electrifying.
Cycle Power on the Silver Coast
On any given Sunday it seems as if those who aren’t playing football are out on the roads or in the hills cycling. Riding bikes, whether racing or just for fun, is very popular in Portugal. There are the occasional big professional races which come through town like a colourful carnival, and dozens of amateur events throughout the year which are open to all comers and hotly competed for by those who take it seriously.
English Import
Football Crazy
The game was brought back to Portugal over 100 years ago by students returning from England, and the first international match was played between these two countries in Lisbon in 1889. Portugal is recorded as narrowly winning the game 2-1.
Golf and more
There is golf - and now is the time to come if you want to experience the Silver Coast golf courses before everyone else does - and there is a whole lot more. Not just one good surfing beach - twenty of them, some world class and some perfect for those just
learning. For walkers and off-road cycling fans there is a huge expanse of open countryside - and there is Montejunto, a mountain that looks like a hill until you find yourself climbing it. And then it becomes a mountain...
Peace and quiet
And there is much more - pine forests to lose yourself in; endless miles of golden beaches for walking barefoot on; fishing spots where your line is the only one casting its shadow on the water;
horse riding through the outdoors; vast areas of water to set sail upon; and most of all the stillness and peace of a place where man has yet to make too much of an impact on the land. On the Silver Coast the opportunities for enjoying your chosen sport or activity are as wide and open as the horizons.
On the Silver Coast you can take in a game of golf in the morning, hike up into the mountains for a picnic lunch and still make it back to the coast in time to surf some perfect tubes in the afternoon. Within an hour's drive there is a sport or leisure activity for almost everyone.
