Easter Holy Week starts in Óbidos today (March 28) with a full programme of historical and religious events.
The week’s spectacle, which attracts both worshippers and curious onlookers, begins at 5pm with a Palm Sunday procession through the narrow lanes of the village which will stop at shrines that symbolise the stations of the cross.
A second procession on Good Friday, April 2, at 9:30pm will commemorate Jesus’ path to Calvary, where he sacrificed his life on the cross.
A cultural programme has also been prepared as part of the week’s celebrations, including a choral performance of works by Dvorak, played by the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras e Coro Regina Coeli. This takes place at 10pm on April 3 at the Santuário do Senhor Jesus da Pedra, located inside the walls of the village.
